Day 3: Fandom meme!
This is ganked from
blythechild,
draycevixen and who knows how many other people by the time I finish typing this ;-)
1. Choose a fandom from the following list: ACD Sherlock Holmes; Almost Human; Battlestar Galactica; BBC Sherlock; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Cabin Pressure; Caprica; Castle; CBC's The National; The Clangers; Community; Eternal Law; Father Ted; Jane Austen (all); Life on Mars; Monty Python; Sleepy Hollow; Warehouse 13. There, that should be enough to suit anyone!
2. Comment here with one of the above fandoms.
3. I will tell you the following:
• The first character I first fell in love with
• The character everyone else loves that I don’t
• The character I love that everyone else hates
• The character I used to love but don’t any longer
• The character I would totally smooch/get friendly with
• The character I’d want to be like
• The character I’d slap
• A pairing that I love
• A pairing that I despise

And also I have the intellectual hots for Terry Milewski. Every time he comes onto the screen, my husband says delightedly, "Eyebrows!" and then we count how often his eyebrows go up and down. (That's nothing to do with the intellectual appreciation, it's just a fun sidebar.) He's also got a wicked side of snark that I sort of love. I'd totally wear a Milewski T-shirt if I could find one.
And let's not even talk about how much enjoyment the chaste on-screen flirtations of Mansbridge and Claire Martin have given us over the years. *sob*
But that's not what you asked about. So, on to Almost Human.
The first character I first fell in love with: Dorrian, naturally. It's that lethal combo of innocence, sincerity and snark. And of course he does human - compassion, emotional vulnerability, decency - consistently better than the biologically human beings on the show. (BTW I'm sure the title isn't just a reference to Dorrian - it's also about Kennex [bionic leg), Stahl (chrome), and anyone else who embodies liminality in some way. My guess is, eventually that'll be ALL the main characters ;-)
The character everyone else loves that I don’t: in danger of echoing Drayce here, but - Kennex. I'd like to love him, but I'm still waiting for him to develop. He's too damn ARMOURED to get close to. Shoot, I feel closer to Rudy than I do to Kennex... which is a disturbing thought.
The character I love that everyone else hates: I dunno if anyone actually hates him, but - Richard Paul. My first taste of the Cardboard Jerk phenomenon was Frank Burns on M*A*S*H and since then I react badly whenever someone is written as two-dimensionally dickish. So I was a bit irked about Paul in the first few eps... until "Straw Man" came along, and we saw that he actually has a kind side when no one is watching. That was just AWESOME.
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: not applicable.
The character I would totally smooch/get friendly with: awww, Dorrian. *nuzzle*
The character I’d want to be like: Dorrian again. He's really my hero in lots of ways. Also I want his X-ray vision!
The character I’d slap: maybe Maldonado, in that ep where the killer "gets under her skin" by implying she's not a real woman because she is single, has a career etc. No, scratch that, I want to slap the writers for putting a female character I respect in that position. Plus it's the late 21st century, for God's sake, has nothing changed? Anyway I just don't buy that Maldonado as a person would be subject to those self-doubts OR would be that easily manipulated.
A pairing that I love: Kennex/Dorrian, or maybe I should say Kennex+Dorrian because the bromance is gorgeous just as it is. )Although, as I am perverse, a side of Paul/Dorrian wouldn't go amiss >:-)
A pairing that I despise: Kennex/Stahl. They're too alike in their reserve, Stahl has that whole Spock thing going on (or rather: Number One), and just - no. They teased each other for a whole season, it went nowhere and was annoying, and I sincerely hope they abandon it for a more nuanced collegial relationship next year. Assuming we get a Season 2, of course. *crosses fingers*

I never thought about Mansbridge and Martin until you mentioned it but they DO flirt often, don't they? Holy shit, I cannot start fanning The National....
When it comes to AH, I just want Stahl gone. Her and her long tresses and Chrome chip on her shoulder thing. Not interested at all. I, too, was pissed about the insecure Maldonado episode, but was so because it felt OOC and not for the deeper feminist reasons that you pointed out. Now I'm angry all over again.
I want to be Dorian because I want to flip a van ;)

Don't worry, there are too many stupid things about it to fan it completely. (Husband and I have given to chirping "And there's a Canadian connection!" at odd moments because we've heard it on The National so regularly.)
This is where I don't say anything about my imaginary Evan Solomon/Mark Kelley RPF...I, too, was pissed about the insecure Maldonado episode, but was so because it felt OOC and not for the deeper feminist reasons that you pointed out. Now I'm angry all over again.
Yeah, the first thing was that it was outrageously OOC (that was not Maldonado), but it was just - so deeply insulting all round, too.
Stahl is tiresome as she's been written so far. They hint and hint at more complex motivation, but just don't show it, and... meh, tease me too long and I get fed up. So I'm with you, please remove her and pop in a female character with some colour to her personality. (I wish they'd done a female Rudy, you know? The geek-scientist-funny-creepy-person doesn't always have to be a guy.)
Dorian is a man[droid] of many powers and I hope they show us many more of them. But so far van-flipping is the most awesome. *nods*
