I'll come as the Trojan Rabbit

...or maybe just a rabbit wearing a Trojan.

Our local movie theatre is kicking off a participatory-cinema series with Quote-Along Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I can hardly wait. And OK, I'm not so hard-core that I know all the lyrics to "Brave Sir Robin", but I do sort of adore this film. Plus the spouse is seriously gung ho! So, sounds like a date.

Here's the write-up:

Grab your coconuts and travel along with King Arthur's fearless Knights of the Round Table on their silly adventure. Prizes for costumes, and bevvies served at the concession stand. Answer our questions three on Saturday, December 10th.

So. Any ideas what I (we) should wear? Seriously I'm kind of leaning towards a minimalist witch hat and a small paper cone over the nose ... but I'm up for other suggestions.

Hit me!

ETA: If I had a cat, and the cat liked Monty Python too, it could wear this.

Oh my god I'm pretty sure I can recite that entire movie from memory. One of my high school notebooks had the lyrics to "Brave Sir Robin" written on the back. I WISH I WERE KIDDING.

I also wish I lived near you! The witch hat & paper nose sounds good to me.

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I used to have most of the movie memorised, too. Not so sure I could manage it now, but huge gobbets of the script are still engraved in my grey matter.

Suddenly I have a craving to get some special buttons made. Such as:

- I'm not a witch, I'm not a witch!
- Alsø alsø wik
- What, the curtains?
- That's no ordinary rabbit!
- A møøse once bit my sister...
- Blue. No, green. AAAUGH!

Yeah. I guess I'm starting early.

(Really I want to go as Tim, but cool hornèd helmets are hard to find hereabouts.)

Ack! Ack! AAAACK!!!! *desperately wants*

Hmm. The movie's on December 10, it's currently November 26, I'm in Canada, shipper's in the States, it ships in 2-6 business days... erm, unlikely to arrive in time. Maybe I'll buy it for the next time they put it on <3333

Seriously though? If I had the time and money and talent (and inclination) to make my own costume, I would dress up as an African swallow. How cool would that be?

Or maybe a coconut on legs. *remembers To Kill a Mockingbird, "Po-ORK!", etc.* ...Or maybe not.

Or -- I could go as the CURTAINS <3333

Sorry, now I'm just being silly. *mumbles to self* Stop it, stop it...

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:19 am (UTC)(link)

I think it's even cheaper from Amazon.. well, US Amazon, I don't know about Canadian Amazon.

Silly? I have nothing to do with silly. *whistles*

I'm not a witch, I'm NOT a witch!

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, now that's a possibility. *looks up*

OK, Amazon Canada is as usually COMPLETELY useless, but Amazon US will ship to me in Canada. I can have it in time only if it's shipped via Priority International Courier. Item is $19.99, shipping & handling $21.59, import fees deposit $2.47... order total $44.05.

Err... *looks shifty* Maybe I'll go with the paper nose. *is responsible adult miserly*

Re: I'm not a witch, I'm NOT a witch!

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:32 am (UTC)(link)

Well that's utterly bloody ridiculous... and your original costume idea is a really good one. *g*

Do you have a local large chain toy shop or a comic book shop? I've seen the Tim the Enchanter helmet in both of them before.

Re: I'm not a witch, I'm NOT a witch!

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
*cheers up* Well, I know a comic book shop that sells the plush Killer Rabbit, heh. Maybe I'll go take a look tomorrow. (Although with this event coming up, they could well be sold out!) But we don't own a car, so getting out to the megastores is always a bit of a challenge. *ponders*

Meh, who am I kidding. I'll probably just go as Not a Witch. And my husband can go as Famous Historian! He's not famous, but he is a historian, so that's close enough <333

Re: I'm not a witch, I'm NOT a witch!

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:43 am (UTC)(link)

I really do like the Not a Witch idea and of course the historian works. Perhaps he could hang a famous sign around his neck. *g*

Re: I'm not a witch, I'm NOT a witch!

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Guess what, he's very keen indeed on this idea! Especially the sign bit, as he doesn't actually own a tie and shirt collar like the real Famous Historian's.

It's perfect, actually, as he is an Historian and I am Not a Witch.

Re: I'm not a witch, I'm NOT a witch!

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)

Then it's definitely a plan.

... and we wouldn't mind you know, as you'd only use your powers for good. *g*

Of course I would!

*shifty eyes*

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I also wish I lived near you!

I wish you did, too <333

The witch hat & paper nose sounds good to me.

*thunderingly* 'Course it's a good idea!!!

*snickers* Damn, I love God.

I don't have any helpful costume ideas - I'm just here to express envy. I WANNA GO TOO!!! :P

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? How excellent is it that someone thought of this? *marvels*

So many lines will be fun to hear chorused by an entire cinema audience, but I'm especially looking forward to "She's beautiful, she's rich, she's got HU-U-U-UGE... tracts of land" (with accompanying hand gestures). And of course singing along with "Camelot" <333

Really I just love that we're giving Grail the Rocky Horror treatment. *hopes there will be coconuts*

BTW I've no idea what other films are in the series, but I'm sort of hoping for "All About Eve", since I just learned that my husband hasn't seen it. My first time, I watched it in a Toronto mini-cinema with an audience of gay men. And yeah... they chorused the best lines :-D

currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 04:11 am (UTC)(link)

I like your current costume idea. :D

And how lovely is that you'd be concerned that your cat liked Monty Python too before making it wear that collar. *g*

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
But, but, if the cat isn't into Python, wearing that collar would only... CONFUSE IT!!!!

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:09 am (UTC)(link)

I really think dogs are more in to Python and cats are big mime fans.

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
cats are big mime fans

True. Not to mention the mouse organ sketch.

You could be right about dogs, but now you've got me puzzling over something. Do any dogs appear in any Python skits? No, not penguins: DOGS. I can't think of any... but then, my Python IQ is not what it was. *hangs head shamefacedly*

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:25 am (UTC)(link)

There's a sketch where they're eating dog and I think dogs show up a few times in the animations... Erm... is there a dog in The Bicycle Repairman sketch?

Greyhounds are coming to mind too for some reason.

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I do seem to remember a racetrack sketch thingy... or am I getting it possibly confused with the alien blancmanges on the tennis courts... Nope, I'm drawing a blank.

Erm... is there a dog in The Bicycle Repairman sketch?

Not that I know of?

There's an [invisible] terrier in a basket in the Pet Conversions sketch, though <333 *is happy*

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:41 am (UTC)(link)

Aha! See, One of the Supermans is walking a dog.

That's sort of how I remember most dog appearances in MP, that they're more an indicator of "normal every day life" rather than the exact subject of a sketch.

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE HOW PART OF HIS COSTUME IS HIS MOUSTACHE <333

Seriously, I'd forgotten how wonderful this sketch is.

*cough* And of course you're right about the dog. *loves Drayce to pieces*

Re: currently my only Python icon...

[identity profile] draycevixen.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:57 am (UTC)(link)

I'm a bit of a dog freak, so I always notice them. *g*

(cool story bro on) When the actors were first rehearsing for the stage musical version, the director was astounded at how quickly they all learned their parts. One of them (don't remember who) told him, "Are you kidding? I've been "off-book" since I was fourteen!" There are just that many Holy Grail geeks and freak abounding. Hubs has been able to quote the whole thing since he was seventeen, because that's when the movie came out. We own a copy of The Screenplay of the Story of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, as well as a vinyl LP of the good bits, and the movie itself on both VHS and DVD. The script is falling apart at the binding. Our children could quote large chunks of it before they were even old enough that we'd actually let them watch it.

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I love your story about the stage musical! Of COURSE they memorised all of it. I remember a documentary, years ago, that looked at the young American fandom. For some reason the bit that stayed in my mind the most was when some fans were chatting amongst themselves about the crew in the credits. Someone said, "Hazel Pethig," and the others all chorused, "Hazel Pethi-i-ig YAAAAAYYYYY". It was just so endearing and adorable :-D

I'm impressed by your collection, too. It is clear that you are serious! I no longer have my copies of the holy texts, but do remember studying them as a teen, e.g. the Brand New Monty Python Bok (although I think I owned only the Papperbok version), reciting the wonderful LLAP-GOCH advert in its entirety, etc.

Aaaaand I just realised that we're all going to get to recite the anarchosyndicalist sketch together, too. LIFE IS GOOD. Hazel Pethi-i-ig YAAAAAYYYYY!!!

[identity profile] grassle.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, how amazing. You're so lucky! Bet you have a brilliant time! (I wanna go!)

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs* I wish you could go, too!

Usually this is the sort of awesome thing that only happens in other cities. I'M SO EXCITED I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO TELL YOU.

Anyway, I'll report back on it to let you all know how it goes. *starts counting the days*

[identity profile] margo-kim.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds so cool! Participatory movies experiences are the best, especially when everyone's so into it.

In an ideal world where costumes are super easy to make, I'd go as the Colonel. No one said the costumes had to be from The Holy Grail and when things get too silly, you can protest.

[identity profile] chamekke.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
I would actually rather like to go as one of the tennis-playing blancmanges:
