I also can't help but believe that the Sam Tyler we knew from canon is the one who shows up here, in a boy's body... and that some sort of inevitable process takes place that reimposes (or imposes!) his 1950 self... aigh!
I've actually hesitated to ask you what was really going on because I figured that wasn't the point; it wasn't about there being one true version of the facts here... and I did have the impression that there was an overarching "Sam really was always in 1950" that I preferred not to buy into because I love the 1973 Sam we're spending time with, here, as he analyzes his conundrum and makes friends with women(!) and protects Gene.
Also, if we had an award for most brilliant Big Bang fic I suspect you'd win hands down. The concept and execution are so awesome!
