First of all, you're right, what's "really" going on isn't the point; as I said above, it's all about Sam's emotional journey, his attempts to find his footing and reconnect with his lost world(s) somehow.
But now I'm thinking I'll have to rewrite what I wrote above... because while I STARTED OUT with the idea that Sam was in 1950 all along, I also wanted to leave the question so ambiguous that either answer *might* be possible, at least to Sam's poor confused mind!
So although (as Loz says) there's no way a 12-year-old boy could have the maturity/vocabulary/knowledge Sam has, everything around him is forcing him to consider: did I actually make all that up? (And then the reader can wonder with him. of course :-)
I actually hesitated to post these writer's notes because I wasn't sure I should reveal what my own thinking behind the story was. TBH, I'm still not sure :-P
