You know, I'm going to have to rewrite some of the writer's notes... because I realised that I deliberately set out to write Sam-in-1950 as thinking like an adult and *not* a child (you remember that post from the other day where you complained about this in another context?). So yes, I was keeping options open for the reader (and to further confuse poor Sam), but... as you say, there was absolutely NO WAY that a 12-year-old boy could have Sam's maturity, knowledge and vocabulary.
Hell, I shouldn't try to explain my thinking. Obviously it was as ambiguous as the story was! ;-)
